Throughout the complete series, the titular promise acts as a leveler, forcing individuals from different classes into intimate, uncomfortable alliances. A wealthy matriarch might be forced to rely on the very servant she once dismissed. A poor farmer might hold the deed that could save the aristocratic family’s estate. The series demonstrates that class is not just about money but about access to justice, healthcare, and the presumption of innocence.
