Installing a UMAX Astra 4100 scanner on Windows 7 can be tricky because UMAX stopped releasing official drivers after Windows XP. However, you can often get it working by using Compatibility Mode or third-party software Microsoft Learn Option 1: Use Windows Compatibility Mode

  1. Open the Scanner Properties: Go to "Control Panel" > "Devices and Printers" (in Windows 7). Right-click on the Umax Astra 4100 scanner icon and select "Properties".
  2. Configure the Scanner Settings: In the Properties window, adjust the scanner settings as desired, such as the scan resolution, color mode, and file format.
  • Click on the Start button.
  • Type devices and printers in the search box and press Enter.

3) Install driver in compatibility mode (if needed)

  1. Download the driver package to a known folder.
  2. Right-click the driver installer (.exe) → Properties → Compatibility tab.
  3. Check “Run this program in compatibility mode for:” and select “Windows Vista” or “Windows XP (Service Pack 3)”.
  4. Also check “Run this program as an administrator.”
  5. Click Apply → OK.
  6. Run the installer and follow on-screen prompts. Reboot if the installer requests it.
  1. Extract the folder.
  2. Go to Device Manager (Start > right-click Computer > Manage > Device Manager).
  3. Your scanner will appear as an "Unknown Device" with a yellow exclamation mark.
  4. Right-click > Update Driver Software > Browse my computer > Let me pick from a list.
  5. Click Have Disk > Browse to the extracted folder and select umax4100.inf.
  6. Ignore warnings about unsigned drivers (Test Mode ignores them).
  7. Install.
