1. The Choreography Burden

The script says, "Ren teaches the kids to dance." That is one sentence. In reality, you need a choreographer who can teach the Lindy Hop, 80s freestyle, and contemporary musical theatre jazz. The JR script actually simplifies the dance breaks from 64 counts to 32 counts, but you still need a crowd of kids who can move in sync. Footloose JR

• The Ballads (Ariel & Ren): "Almost Paradise" requires emotional vulnerability. We worked on "straight tone" singing to sound intimate, saving the vibrato for the final chorus.
• The Gospel (Shaw & Vi): "Heaven Help Me" is a tricky number because it sits in the "break" of a teen male voice. We lowered the key by a half-step and focused on the speaking voice quality of the singing.
• The Belts (Urleen, Wendy Jo, Rusty): "Holding Out for a Hero" is a workout. We taught the girls about "twang" and mask resonance so they don't blow out their voices by Act Two.
