This paper examines the transformation of Indian culture and lifestyle content from traditional, regionally bound practices to a global, digital-first phenomenon. Focusing on the rise of YouTube, Instagram, and short-form video platforms (e.g., Moj, Instagram Reels), the study analyzes how lifestyle creators curate, commodify, and contest notions of “Indianness.” Using a mixed-method approach—content analysis of 100 top lifestyle influencers and semi-structured interviews with 20 creators—the paper identifies three key shifts: (1) the sanitization of caste and ritual for urban consumption, (2) the hybrid “Hinglish” aesthetic as a marketable vernacular, and (3) the tension between authenticity and aspirational globalized living. Findings suggest that Indian lifestyle content is no longer merely representative but performative and prescriptive, shaping domestic consumption patterns and the diaspora’s cultural memory. The paper concludes by proposing a new framework—“Semiotic Swadeshi”—to understand how digital creators localize global trends while exporting Indian cultural signifiers.
