Abstract

This paper examines the emergent digital practice of using decorative “binarios” (binary strings such as 01001000 01101111 01101100 01100001) as copy-paste content for WhatsApp statuses, bios, and group messages during 2021–2022. While binary code traditionally serves a functional programming purpose, its repurposing as an aesthetic, cryptic, or humorous ornament among Spanish-speaking users reflects broader trends in digital folk art and subcultural communication. Drawing from netnographic observations of WhatsApp groups, social media archives (Twitter, TikTok, and Facebook), and user-generated collections from 2021 and 2022, the study identifies three primary functions of these “binarios”: (1) performative geek identity, (2) pseudo-encrypted messaging for playful secrecy, and (3) pattern-based visual minimalism. The paper further discusses how copy-paste culture and search behaviors around “binarios para WhatsApp” illustrate the commodification of code-like symbols as vernacular design elements. Findings suggest that the 2021–2022 peak coincided with pandemic-related increases in digital decoration practices and nostalgia for early internet aesthetics. The study concludes by proposing that seemingly trivial user-generated binaries function as a low-tech form of digital bricolage, bridging coding literacy and everyday mobile communication.

Hidden Messages
Many binary strings actually encoded Spanish or English phrases. Curious recipients could decode them using online binary-to-text converters. This created a sense of secret communication – a digital “in-joke” among teens and young adults.
