Abstract

The term Karen has become a globally recognized meme denoting a privileged, demanding, often white‑middle‑class woman who insists on “speaking to the manager.” While most scholarship treats the Karen phenomenon as a gendered critique of entitlement, little attention has been paid to the counter‑narratives that portray “Karen” figures as bellas y ambiciosas—beautiful and ambitious—particularly within Spanish‑language digital spaces. This paper investigates how Spanish‑speaking content creators, influencers, and online communities re‑frame the Karen stereotype to celebrate agency, aesthetics, and entrepreneurial spirit. Through a mixed‑methods analysis of 150 TikTok videos, 73 Instagram posts, and 42 YouTube vlogs (January 2022 – December 2024) that explicitly use the phrase “bellas y ambiciosas Karen,” we identify three dominant discursive strategies: (1) Aesthetic Re‑appropriation, (2) Entrepreneurial Empowerment, and (3) Subversive Irony. Findings reveal that the “beautiful‑and‑ambitious Karen” functions simultaneously as a site of resistance against gendered vilification and as a marketing device that commodifies aspirational femininity. The paper concludes by suggesting that the Karen meme’s fluidity underscores broader tensions in digital identity formation and calls for a nuanced, multilingual approach to meme studies.
