Aesthetic and Direction
Pasolini’s direction is distinctively humanist and unpolished. He famously cast non-professional actors ("the people") alongside professionals, searching for faces that looked as though they had stepped out of a Renaissance painting or an ancient manuscript.

The Archive copy retains the film's devastating final minute. Scheherazade, the frame narrator, is never shown in the film, but in the final shot, a young girl draws a circle in the sand and points to the moon. Pasolini holds this shot for an excruciating 90 seconds. In chopped versions, this is reduced to 20 seconds.
